Music Videos:Exam Question- Little Mix, Media Language

Explain how the Little Mix ‘Black Magic’ Video uses Media Language (15)

The video ' Black magic' uses Media Language in many ways. The girls, at the beginning are dressed as stereotypical 'geeks' to show the differentiation and reality of teens nowadays and how the 'geeks' get treated differently to the normal 'popular' girls. The change in outfits causes the facial expressions of the artists to change dramatically from miserable and dull to happy and inferior showing the audience that when they were 'geeks' they weren't happy and just wanted be popular so they could be happy.

The use of extreme close up of each artist - at they end when they are in a circle, demonstrates each personality to make the audience familiar with who the main artists are in the video. The cinematography in the video such as a pan(at the beginning when introducing the band in the video) establishes to the audience that they are the most significant.

The use of the fast pace editing and quick cut shots establishes to the audience the genre (pop) and confines to the pace of the music. The shots are cut to the beat of the music while portraying a story throughout. This makes the audience familiarise themselves with the storyline of the video and the likability of the song.

  1. This is an excellent response well done Lexie 13/15 (Above target)

You have identified different elements of Media language and explained what the effect was. You have also referred to examples.

To improve this further, I'd like to see you discussing the mies-en-scene of other characters (as well as Little Mix).

    Very impressive though, well done!
