What are the the codes and conventions of music magazine covers? Are these on the MOJO cover?
The codes and conventions of music magazine covers are main images, coverlInes, masthead etc. Mojo magazine has an ordered content with cover lines mostly aligned and a central image to highlight the main artist/band that are further presented on a double page spread inside. The layout of the magazine connotes seriousness and authenticity and maturity to reflect the target audience of the magazine. The dominated image of the band on the front cover is used to reflect the serious style of the magazine and values of fans of the 'classic rock' genre.

How does the choice (selection and exclusion) of elements influence meaning on the magazine cover?

The ethnicities of the people on the front cover are all white. There is only 4 white males as the main picture suggesting the target audience is white males therefore they amplify thaty the target audience of white males will read the magazine.

The colours on the front cover of this magazine are bright and outgoing which connotes with happiness and attracts people to want to read this magazine due to the outgoing colours. The use of the gradient background gives the colours a more suttle look and not overtaking the main image of the artists. The main band (Pink Floyd) use direct eye contact to engage the reader. The main image uses a close up of the band with lighting under the artists to make them look inferior. The font used is exclusively sans- serif and alot of capitalisation is used for each coverline to stand out.

What is the language used on the front cover?
The language used on the front cover is informal to interest the reader. The language emphasises the danger how they 'attack' songs. The language used shows a  connection to the target audience - making it easier to read.

The relationship between technology and media language on the cover is that the magazine gives a free cd with the magazine. The reason that MOJO does this is because it makes people want to get the magazine as they get to read the magazine and also get a free cd that they can listen to for free.

Is there intertextuality used to create meaning?
In the cover of the 'magazine, there is intertextuality to Trump. This creates meaning to show how the magazine links to political contexts and the outside world.

Comments

  1. You've analysed this well and made some very good points!

Make sure you add the discussion we had about the genre being reflected by the psychedelic effect on the Pink Floyd cover.
Additionally, you need to ensure that you make links to the genre as the decisions made are not only based on the target audience, but the genre too.

    Good work Lexie!
