Magazine: Mojo Media Language Representation (Summer Work)
Pink Floyd Magazine
Celebrity Culture
The front cover for the 'Pink Floyd' follows stereotypical representations as the white males on the cover are powerful. The close up shots of the the band show there facial expressions looking dominating. The direct eye contact on the cover make them look superior and in control. Pink Floyd look scary and conform to the dominant representation of 'rock' artists.
Multiculturalism
On the cover the ethnicity is white - this reflects the target audience and how it is mainly white men. The fact that there is only a white people on the front cover this shows how the magazine doesn't accept other ethnicities in the time it was made as only a white male is shown, showing that the magazine are in favour of white people.
LGBT
On the cover, there is no mention of homosexual relationships/ relationships at all. This may be because there is no need to mention this as its all about music. On the cover, there is a group of only men which could suggest heterosexual relationship as no women are present.
Changes in gender roles
On the cover, there is only a male present. There is no women present which could suggest how the genre of rock is only for males and how they are not in favour of women as they il not be into this type of genre of music. In the time of MOJO magazine being created, men were superior and women were inferior therefore targeting males if more common.
Sex Pistols Magazine
Celebrity Culture
The stereotype of a rock magazine is a white male who is dominating and strong on the front cover however in the 'Sex Pistols' have conformed to the dominant representation by there being a white male being the central image. The facial expressions of the artist on the front cover of the magazine conform to the stereotypical 'rock' magazine as they are serious. The countertype of the colour pink being used as a girl colour challenges the male stereotype.

The fact that there is only a white person on the front cover this shows how the magazine doesn't accept other ethnicities as only a white male is shown, showing that the magazine are in four of white people.

Top Of The Pops & MOJO ('Pink Floyd')
On the Top Of The Pops (TOTP) front cover all the things on it are cramped together and cluttered. The structure is very cluttered and doesn't follow a set structure. The target audience for this magazine is around ages 8-16. Therefore the target audience wont mind about the cluttered layout. On the cover, there are many celebrities that the target audience may find interesting and are fans of. With the MOJO magazine front cover, the structure is clear and neat and includes only one artist on the front covers instead of loads. The organisation of the magazine makes it easy to read for the reader. The target audience of this magazine is 30-60 years old males therefore having the magazine neat is easy for those ages to read.
On the MOJO magazine, the only other image to appear on the front cover is a small image to the top right hand corner of the page. Additionally the use of this image attracts the readers as well as the bold statement across the top of the page. By featuring the names of a wide variety of artists, the magazine aims to reach out to and interest all those who are fans of these artists, therefore effectively casting out a large net to maximise the number of copies sold. As well as the various artists, there is a graphic to the bottom right of the page creating a link to an article within the magazine reviewing 'Pink Floyd'.
The use of typography in TOTP is very basic as it is all the same style of text however as it is the same style of text it is very easy to read. An issue with the typography is that the key words are made bold which I think looks unappealing and if they simply change the colour of the text it would be better also the bold text does not relate to the target audiences as its very heavy and females are stereotypically seen as light and small so the typography should relate. In the MOJO magazine the typography is in a simple font that is easy to scan over and read quickly, giving the reader the advantage of deciding quickly whether they want to buy the magazine of not. The sans-serif typefaces and capitalisation used connotes modernity to reflect on the target audience of the older generation.

Remember that one of the covers does actually have a female artist present, however the image is very small. What could this suggest?
ReplyDeleteYou've thought about how different contexts have influenced both covers, which will really push your marks up.
Your analysis is good however you could do with some more key terminology (especially with conventions!). Additionally, you could have analysed the colours used, shot type, costumes etc and considered why these decisions were made.
Be careful not to make your own opinions, you must always think of the target audience.

You generally analyse much better than this. Don't forget your PEE structure and always discussed the connotations within your explanation. WHY have the decisions been made? How does it affect the TA?
Textual analysis mark = Level 5
