Magazine: Magazine Revenue

Magazine Revenue

How are magazines funded commercially?

Revenue(Income)
Magazines receive revenue from:

- Circulation (cover price - £5.25 for MOJO in 2017 --- £5.50 2018 : up for 25p)

-Advertising (in MOJO, mostly live or recorded music, with some fashion advertising

-Mass advertising – e.g. Specsavers – and some cross-promotion for other Bauer brands, such as Empire)

-Sponsored content and product placement - for example, ‘MOJO listens to all its music on Roksan equipment’

How do they use different funding models to generate income?

The print magazine industry is suffering from falling advertising revenues and falling circulations as many of their audience go online.(people looking online instead of buying paper quality)

Sponsored content and Product placement = Product is advertised to the audience by being placed in media product in exchange for money. (company pay certain people to promote there products in other medias to gain the audience)

Their response have been to diversify as much as possible – Events-  e.g. Vogue runs fashion events, GQ runs comedy -  good example of this – and to move magazines online (to gain more income then selling paper copies)

Funding

Magazine publishing is in the hands of international companies (Beaur Media) ^Globalisation: Institutions increasingly operate on a worldwide scale.
Eg: Vogue- owner: advance publications(US newspaper and magazine group)

Is the media product selling itself to its audience, e.g. through use of promotional material? Through advertisements? (MOJO)

The magazine begin to promote the store of HMV (sell music cds/records) which connect to the genre of the magazine as they have specifically picked out pieces of music that conform to the rock genre. The ad promotes these songs as they are 'the best new releases' for the target audience. There is an advertisement of Planet rock and Empire who are owned by Baeur media meaning they  have done a cross promotion.

The media produce uses many famous artists that the audience may like, making them interested in reading about the group/artist. The use of bright but subtle colours lure in  the target audience as the mellow colour of pink will attract the eye. As the magazine uses several ads this gives an appeal to specific target groups because of the types of ads eg new music etc.

What’s online? What’s available to audiences? How does it engage with different people?  Who does this target? What’s the advantage of having this platform?

On the mojo website there are many things that the target audience can access for further information and more. For example, there is an updated playlist which lets people listen to the top rock songs of the year. The website has articles (stories), competitions, tickets to concerts, a store, newsletter and a chance to win and subscribe. The website engages with the audience as it gives them a wide selection of things to see in detail and find out more about certain psychedelic rock artists, new releases and recommended songs to fit with the genre. On the website there is an option to subscribe to the magazine - this lets the audience engage with the magazine and follow when a new issue comes out. By having this accessible to the public, the magazine gains more revenue with each issue being more likely to be read and enjoyed. The website also includes a section to buy merchandise with famous psychedelic rock artists featured or even just words that connote to the genre of rock - the use of this being accessible to the public allows another way in which the magazine can gain popularity as public purchasing can link to other people visiting the website to buy these clothes/ engaging in the magazines stories etc. The website includes a section to have the chance to win expensive gifts which allows any member of the public to be in with a chance to win something if thats what they want to do they have an option to do this.
The website is very bland with only colours of black and white which makes the older target audience not confused and find it easier to find what they are looking for. The advantage of having a website lets people who are unable to buy this magazine due to financial issues or because they cannot get hold of it, a chance to catch up with mojo's news, articles and other exciting things etc.

- The company who owns Mojo is the Bauer Media Group and mojo is funded by advertisements and the money that comes from people purchasing the magazine.
- The effect of commercial publishing companies on the industry produces and distributes magazines and periodicals in print and electronic format aimed at individuals, tradesmen and professionals.
- Magazines get there money from subscriptions and advertising.
